Thick Gold Bands

The thick bands with coils seen in the Balenciaga show stopped me in my tracks.  Love this showstopping all finger accessory.  I thought maybe the bands + the coils might be a little much for me but the bands on their own, sign me up!  I found several options at every price point.  I have the ASOS ones on order and will be sure to post a pic on instagram when I get them!  If you haven't yet, don't forget to follow me there!

Layers Upon Layers

Forever21 Shirt  |  Aritzia Sweater  |  Mackage Leather Jacket  |  Maison Scotch Shearling Vest (similar)

It is finally feeling like Spring here in Chicago so thought I'd get this post up and out of the way.  This outfit is from last week when it was still pretty chilly out and really hoping this will be the last winter look I post this season.

This post is another layering story.  Stock your closet with lots of layering pieces in neutral colors and you can create dozens of new and interesting looks.  Btw...is anyone else sad that "Ready for Love" got cancelled?

Speaking of love...7 years ago on this day, hubby and I committed our lives to one another and haven't looked back since.  Steak and frites, if you're reading this....saranghae..

Freezing Florals

Zara floral top (similar)  |  rag & bone jeans  |  Maison Scotch vest  |  L.A.M.B. shoes (similar)
Aritzia coat (similar)  |  Celine bag  |  Cartier watch  |  Madewell, Jules Smith, Giles & Brother bracelets

Um...last I checked, we're a week from May and somehow it is still freezing here in Chicago.  I got this floral shirt at the end of last summer and have been waiting to wear it all winter long.  I finally decided...screw the weather, it's my life and I'll wear florals if I want to.  Of course, being that it was freezing and all, I still had to top it off with a shearling vest and a wool coat.  Spring...this isn't funny anymore.  Where are you?

Sheer Overlay Dress

Mason by Michelle Mason Shift Dress with Insets

I wrote about sheer overlays on my favorite Spring trends post last month.  I've been seeing these kinds of dresses everywhere but this Mason by Michelle Mason number is the best of the best.  I've been stalking it for a month and it just dropped in price from $462 to $324.  Sadly, I don't have an occasion to wear this dress for but if you're in the market for a sexy mama dress, this one's for you!

Origami Skirt

Zara skort (similar here & here)  |  Forever21 sweater  |  Urban Outfitters moto vest (now $19!!)

The Proenza Schouler origami skirts from the Fall shows were perfection.  This version from Zara is close enough and at a great price ($49!)  So comfortable and super flattering on.  I was able to snag one in both white and black before they sold out online.  When they recently came out with a blue version, I had to stop myself from getting a third.  Who needs 3 identical origami skirts really?

Waist Tied Shirt

J.Crew sweatshirt  |  BDG jeans  |  Madewell shirt  |  Phillip Lim sandals (similar)
Louis Vuitton (circa 80's passed down from my mother)  |

Trends from the 90's (overalls, we're talking to you!) becoming hip again make me feel nostalgic in the best way possible and ancient in the worst way possible.  When I see young 20-something fashionistas wearing these trends, I wonder if it's a first for them.  Whereas, I have flashbacks of walking the hallways with my plaid flannel tied around my waist and backpack slung over one shoulder.  Ah the memories!

And before I sign off....my thoughts and prayers are with Boston today.

White Moto Vest

Zina from fashionvibe.com, taken by Vanessa Jackman

I saw this picture awhile ago and though we were still in the neverending depths of winter at the time, I was inspired and decided this was how I wanted to look this summer.  A playful, floral romper anchored by an incredibly chic and crisp white moto vest.

So, my hunt for a white (faux) leather moto vest began.  There aren't actually a lot out there so it took more time than usual to come up with this list.  It was especially challenging to find an affordable option but I finally tracked one down.

Will you be getting a moto vest this season? White? Black? Denim? I'd love to hear from you!

The Statement Necklace

6. BaubleBar Mint Collar $42  |  7. Dannijo Anoushka Necklace (now 50% off!!)

Yesterday, a friend (actually a close friend of my sister's) asked me to recommend a statement necklace.  I was flattered she was asking me since she's so chic herself but almost immediately, I started thinking of the pieces I wanted to show her.  I decided to share some of my favorite statement necklaces with you all as well.

I would say, my all time favorite that I've been lusting after for awhile are the Fallon Classique pieces. They're stunning on their own and work beautifully stacked as well.  I love how you can wear something very simple and just add a fun necklace to amp up your look.

Here are some of the ways I would style a statement necklace:
- with a Spring/Summer 2013 appropriate origami skirt and plain white t-shirt
- button down shirt buttoned to the top with the necklace under the collar.
- worn in or vintage tee topped with a motorcycle jacket
- with a simple sheath dress for work
- all white look topped with a silk sports jacket

Honestly, I could go on and on.  A statement necklace can go over pretty much anything you have on, as long as it's not too busy already.  Do you have a favorite statement necklace? Have you jumped on the stacking necklace bandwagon yet?

Quick tip: If you are planning to stack necklaces, you will need some necklace extenders. If you don't have the tools at home, you can buy some premade extenders on Amazon.

Edgy Glam

DIY Celine t-shirt  |  Urban Outfitters moto vest ($29 on sale now!)  |  Zara brocade pants (similar)
Forever21 necklaces  |  L.A.M.B. shoes (similar)  |  Aritzia coat (similar)  |  Celine bag

I love when a piece you didn't expect to be, reveals itself to be pretty versatile.  Cue these brocade pants.  I wore them in the fall with my go-to cable knit sweater (here) and the same pumps and handbag.  This time, I swapped out the sweater with a t-shirt and a moto vest.  The t-shirt says to me "I don't try that hard" (okay fine, I kinda do) while the moto vest says "But I'm cool like that."  Wait...you mean, your clothes don't talk to you? And course, I topped the whole thing off with dylanlex inspired stacked necklaces.

And I know some of you have been asking for more info on the Celine t-shirt.  I didn't take any pics while making it but here's basically what I did.

Materials: white t-shirt (mine's from Target), black fabric marker, printer

1. I found a good picture of the logo. I enlarged the size and printed it out.
2. I put the printed out logo under the front of the shirt and traced the logo with a pencil.
3. I then went over it with black fabric marker.

The fabric marker was hard to work with and in the end, it didn't turn out as neatly as I would have liked, but that hasn't stopped me from wearing it.  I'd love to hear from you if you end up tackling this DIY!

White Flat Sandals

$$: Belle Sigerson Morrison $195
$$$: KORS by Michael Kors $250
$$$$: Marsell $685

I've been on the hunt for a pair of flat white sandals for this summer.  I love how fresh and crisp the white looks against all the black, tan and metallic versions you see everywhere.  Here are a collection of flat white sandals, whatever your budget may be.  I personally am kind of obsessed with the Belle Sigerson Morrison pair.  The neon edging adds a perfect hint of the unexpected.

Neutral w a Leopard Pop

Aritzia coat (similar here and here)  |  Gap sweater (similar)  |  Forever21 leopard shirt (similar)
Rag & Bone jeans  |  L.A.M.B. shoes (similar)  |  DIY clutch

It was one of those "I have nothing to wear" days, when I caught sight of this forever21 leopard shirt from years ago (worn here).  I tried layering a couple different tops over it before settling on this grey sweater.  I threw on my current favorite pair of jeans (distressed Rag & Bone's that are unbelievably comfy!) and some killer pumps.  I finished off the look with my oversized clutch from American Apparel that I added DIY stripes too.  I promise to post about that soon!

So the moral of the story is: play around with the pieces you already own and try pairing or layering them in new and different ways!

Bridal Shower Recap

A dear friend got married last weekend and here are pictures from her bridal shower a few weeks ago.  We went with a grey and yellow theme, inspired by a pretty table runner the bride had.  I found the sweetest paper goods at Paper + Pip on etsy, which perfectly complemented and highlighted our theme. Thank you Paper + Pip for the invites and paper goods!!
Mimosa Bar: variety of juices and prosecco.
We used CB2 pitchers (only $5.95 each!) for the juices.  Yellow ribbon was added to the pitchers and yellow paper in the apothecary jars to make everything cohesive.
We went with a brunch theme for the brunch loving bride.
On the menu (only some shown): truffled egg salad, salmon tartare, chicken and waffles, potato egg casserole, frittata, beet salad, trader joe's croissants, fruit salad and more!
cupcake toppers by Paper + Pip
One of the other bridesmaids saw these pillars at BHLDN and was inspired to DIY. She purchased stair posts from a hardware store and cut slits in them.  The natural wood went so well with our theme and with the Paper + Pip labels, they added nice height to our table.
Printable Scattergories Game cards c/o and she loved flowers on etsy. Thank you!!
We used the straw labels from Paper + Pip for pencils instead.

With our limited prize budget, we decided to get eos lip balms in a variety of colors.  Packaged with a label and some taupe ribbon, they looked cute!

Printable Bridal Bingo cards c/o Inklings Paperie on etsy. Thank you!!
This is the aformentioned runner that inspired us to go with the yellow and grey theme.  We intended for people to take polaroids and write marriage advice on them but somehow, the advice part never happened and we just ended up taking a bunch of pictures.
For flowers, I picked up 3 bunches of flowers from Trader Joe's in whites and yellows for $12. We mixed and matched them in a variety of small vases.
Coffee bean favors for the coffee loving bride.
The coffee beans went in glassine bags before folding and stapling the labels over it.

A HUGE thank you to Paper + Pip (also for the gorgeous invitations!), and she loved flowers, and Inklings Paperie!!!!
